Way to go Comcast

I woke up this morning and tried to get on the interweb and wouldn’t you know it the cable modem was down. So I went down and cycled the power, nothing… Looked at the status web page for it and it says that it had only half of the signal. So I rerouted the house network through the DSL modem and went to Adelphia/Comcast’s online support chat thingy. Needless to say the person on the other side was clueless and said there were no problems in the area and that I needed to call a support phone line to get them to see what was going on. So I called that line and for the first time in the 6 years I have called them I was transfered to some one with out going in to a queue. So I repeat the problem to this guy. He then asks where I was at, so I told him. Then he said:

Oh, I think I know what is going on, yeah let me check. Oh Yeah, your town is being moved from Adelphia to Comcast this weekend and we shut off all the cable modems for between 24 and 48 hours. We sent out letters and email’s about it.

So I then told him that even though he thinks he sent them out, I never got them, and pretty sure no one else did. It was never in the local paper as well. I then told him he needed to contact his online support people as they said everything was fine. What a great way to move people, shut off their internet for 1 to 2 days and not tell them. I bet I get a third class letter in the mail on monday talking about it. At least he tried to apologize for me not getting the letter. Best thing about all of this is the students moved back in over the weekend so now there are 25,000+ people angry they can not get on the internet.

After a while of the problem being fixed. Adelphia/Adelcast/Comdelphia/Comcast has done it again. WPXI out of Pittsburgh is back to full screen mode. Guess I will try calling them again if it is like this tomorrow night again.

Latest post ever

Well I think this is the latest post I have ever done. I watched the MacWorld 2006 video this evening, which was cool, and decided that I would run a vacuumdb on the Spam database (housed in a PostgresDB on a 8way UltraSparcIII with 32 GB of ram Sun F12k Domain) since I was running out of room in the file system that holds it. (Currently the DB is over 50GB in size). The last time I ran this it took about 2 hours to do it, it has now been running for 4 hours and it still going… To top that off, for what ever reason Adelphia’s Digital Cable decided to go out tonight, I still get all the analog channels, just non of the digital cables work, which makes me mad as I was going to tape a couple of movies tonight, but all I got was black. Tried cycling the power on the reciever, nothing, tried changing to different channels, nothing. Even went in to the service mode (SA Explorer 3100, hold down the + on the front of the receiver and then when the “email light” comes on release and press the info button, 21 pages of goodness) and everything looked fine. So I guess I will wait and see what happens later today.

Anyways, back to the Spam DB, as I have been sitting here, it took 2.3 hours just to
go through one table. Does any one know how to make the vacuumdb run faster? The box is almost completely idle… I have done similar stuff in MySQL and it takes no where as long as this does. (Granted I am not as familiar with Postgres as I am with MySQL.)
