USAirways does it again

October 3rd, 2007

I was going through my RSS feeds tonight and saw this USA Today article about how USAirways is pulling more flights out of Pittsburgh, PA.. As I read down through the article something else catches my eye:

As for commercial service, the following cities will lose US Airways service to Pittsburgh: Charleston, W. Va.; Chicago O’Hare; Denver; Erie, Pa.; Norfolk, Va.; and Toronto. Depending on the final scheduling decisions of US Airways’ regional, US Airways says it assumes the following cities will also likely lose Pittsburgh service: Bradford, Pa.; Clarksburg, W. Va.; Franklin, Pa.; Jamestown, N.Y.; Johnstown, Pa.; Lewisburg, W. Va.; Louisville; Morgantown, W. Va.; Nashville; Parkersburg, W. Va.; Syracuse, N.Y.; and Washington Dulles. Among the non-hub flights US Airways is expected to keep are routes to Los Angeles, San Francisco and Orlando, among others.

The key thing in that excerpt, the Morgantown, WV, Parkersburg WV, and Clarksburg WV. We just finally got commercial air service back since the flop with Regions Air (dba Continental Express), and now we have Colgan (dba USAirways Express). So if they are going to cut the flights out of the Tri-City’s to Pittsburgh, were are the flights going to go now? Dulles, Regan? Either would be cool if they did, make my life a little easier. I predict in a year USAir will only be flying a couple of connecting flights out of Pittsburgh to PHL and CLT. This sucks really bad as now I have over 50,000 miles on USAir and not really anywhere to go from Pittsburgh..

What I think should happen is that JetBlue take over PIT and make it a major hub like BOS and JFK are. There are always problems with flying out of BOS and JFK due to either weather, or too many planes in the area etc… Now is the perfect time for JetBlue to make a nice hub that rarely experiences weather problems or delays like JFK/BOS do. This would help JetBlue fix the delay problem before the FAA steps in to start changing flight schedules.. Which reminds me because of the amount of congestion in JFK I got an email from JetBlue saying both of my flights that were routed through JFK have been changed. The first one was changed by like 10 or 20 minutes on the connection through JFK. The second flight they instead are rerouting it through BOS.

Come on JetBlue, increase your service at PIT and make it a good hub again. I think you would do very well there.

Olive Garden

We finally made it in to the new Oliver Garden in town last night. Funny thing is it has been open for about 6 months or so now but everytime we have went there, there has been a ton of people there and a wait of over 1 hour to get in. They also don’t accept call ahead’s. Last night when we got there there were about 8 people in the lobby. We went in and they immediately set us which was a surprise. One thing I did not like is that when we got there there were 3 kids outside, one of them was about 12 years old or so, and was playing with a switch blade knife and chasing the other 2 kids around with it. Do parents not care what their kids do in public any more?

Cheap Co Location

Tonight I have been looking around the internet to see if I can find a cheap place to co-locate a server in the SW Pennsylvania / North Central West Virginia Area. Not as easy as it seems, especially for an individual. What I am wanting is a place to put a 1 or 2U rack server running Solaris 10 to house some domains that I and some friends have. See we all are using different hosting companies. Mine is good, but I am limited to 2 GB of disk, which is small for me as I have over 8 gb of pictures I would like to put up. Another friend has problems with his company as they are pretty much morons when it comes to hosting, and his site is routinely down because the load on the server is over 140, and it is on a dual xeon machine. I guess none of these companies have heard of Solaris 10 and it’s cool zones features. If I could only win the powerball tonight, I would buy my own building and set up my own hosting company using Solaris 10 and not Linux. Why use Solaris 10? Well it is quite easy:

  1. Zones: By far the coolest thing since vmware. By giving each customer their own zone, they are pretty much free to do what ever they want in it, with out affecting the other customers. (This does assume that you have the zone configured so it can not use more than X processor, etc).
  2. ZFS: This is the coolest file system in the world.
  3. Security: Solaris is years ahead of linux in terms of security. Think Trusted Solaris, RBAC, built in stack over flow protection, ACLs,etc
  4. Free: Yup, Solaris is free, as are the awesome Sun Studio Compilers, and most of Sun’s other leading software products. (N.B. Support costs no matter if you use Linux or Solaris, but Solaris support is cheaper. Check out Solaris is a better Linux than Linux
  5. Fast: Solaris 10 is by far the fastest OS I have seen. I have it running my house network on an old Pentium II 266MHZ machine. It is way faster than Solaris 9 on the exact same box.

So if any one knows of any co location places, or wants to help setup such a place let me know. I think setting up a collocation place to house servers for the individual would be very cool. Just need to find some funding to get it all started.

As I mentioned earlier I had a feeling that one of the restaurants was going to be either a Oliver Garden or Red Lobster. Well it is confirmed, it will be a Olive Garden…

Was today the day before christmas?

Made the mistake of leaving the house today.. Not only was there 3/4 inch of ice on the driveway, but the entire town was mad.. There was a basketball game today so traffic was bad from that. But we went to Target and I have never seen so many people in there. We then had to go to lowes, and the line of traffic leaving the mall area went all the way up the hill and wrapped completely around the mall. We talked to a cashier in one of the stores and she had heard at one point it took some one 30 minutes to get from the mall to the stop light at the bottom of the hill. Did I accidently go to sleep for a week and a half? I still need to do Christmas shopping, just hope it is not like that when I want to go.
