ATI and Linksys

May 10th, 2006

Well I got my Video card and router back last week. Have not tried the router yet (haven’t had time to). I did put the video card in (it was a refurb, that had some weird “substance” on part of it so I was suprised that it works) and now I can finally watch tv on the machine. I have a feeling I am going to be reinstalling that machine from scratch again here soon as now I can barely do two things at once if I have the TV running. For example the other night I was trying to print out a rather large document (printer is attached to the parallel port) and while it was printing it was causing the TV output to skip and hang. Why I don’t hae a clue, it should have no effect considering I am running an AMD 3200+ with 2G of ram and 1TB of disk. But reformating will probably not happen until june or so as next weekend (May 21) is going to be a full day of work because of Fire Supression testing, and the weekend after that is a family reunion. Another reason I hate windows, having to reinstall every 6 months to a year because of stupid reasons. I have Sun, Linux and SGI machines that are still running the same OS that was installed a couple of years ago, if not 7 years ago.

Is the machine with a video card running
windows? In my experience, anything that does
IO will suck down the CPU because of (I assume)
the highly interrupt-based nature of the IO
subsystem in windows. Even if the CPU is fast,
the context switching will kill you. The OS and
the drivers are all tuned for someone doing one
task a time. That’s why people who use windows
tend to have multiple PC’s if they do media
stuff. (All just my from experience. YMMV)

Yeah it runs windows. (I need it for Premiere and Photoshop for some side jobs I do in my spare time.) What is weird is I never experienced the problem before.. But then again I don’t print that often either. Thanks for the hints!
