SunRay at home
I have had SunRay’s at my house hooked up to the server at the office. Doing this was not a small task. It required a special DHCP config and a DSL line provided by my office to get back to the server. Now with the new SunRay Server Software most of the config can be handled by DNS. So I setup a new server running Solaris 10 and the SunRay Server Software 3.1. Install was just as easy as version 2.0 of the software. Once I got the firmware updated on my test SunRay 150 unit, I removed the DHCP options on my test network and configured the DNS servers to have the sunray-servers and sunray-config-servers entries. And it worked… Now the test this evening was to get the SunRay 150 unit I have at home to connect to the same server over the cable modem. First I had to update the server on the SunRay 150, which means I had to set up the DHCP and tftp server at home again to support upgrading it quickly. Next I verified that I could connect and that worked. Now was time to remove the DHCP options, and that worked but only through the DSL modem. So I must have some port blocked that needs to be opened, or it could be the very old USRobotics router that I am using on the Cable modem side. So tomorrow I am going to try to move my Linksys WRT54G router over ot the cable modem and see if that works, if it doesn’t then I will just have to open all the ports and start looking at IP filter to see what is being used. (I had opened port 7000 through 7030 on the firewall, but I guess I missed something.)
If I can get this to work, then all the people in my group will get SunRay’s to take home. It is so much better than having to drive in to the office at 3AM in the morning.
